Band 7+: Some people think that it is beneficial for children to do paid work, while others think that it can be harmful for children. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Although some believe that employing children to carry out paid labour is good for them, others may argue that this will only be detrimental to them. In my opinion, I truly believe that the pros in this case overshadow the cons.

One of the benefits of allowing children to work is that it provides them a sense of responsibility. Children may go out to seek employment for a multitude of reasons ranging from finding something to do during summer break or helping financially support their families. Regardless, this would be a great learning experience for them as doing paid work can help them understand the importance and value of hard work. This would better help them adapt to the adult life where they can cope with the challenges of working the typical 9-to-5. Additionally, giving children the opportunity to work can give them a source of income. Regardless of how big their paycheck is, being able to earn some money can greatly benefit adolescents and teenagers as their earnings can help support themselves or their families financially or be saved up for their college fund.

On the flip side, one may argue that children should not have to work because it may reinforce the idea that they should neglect their childhood and grow up fast. Since working is more of an adult-oriented task, some may hold the belief that children are unable to survive in such an environment in which they may face physical, mental or emotional fatigue along with the deprivation of a proper childhood experience. However, this thinking is flawed as ultimately, the advantages can help build grit and hone whatever skills they would need in the workforce. Although, they may have to feel the pain of not being able to be a child to some extent, in the long run, their hard work will pay off for them. Additionally, it is not totally impossible for employed children to still be children as jobs typically offer days off on the weekends and certain holidays, making it perfect for children to have some time to themselves.

In conclusion, while there may be some downsides to exposing children to the workforce, ultimately, giving them the experience of having a job will benefit them tremendously in adulthood. Although they may have to sacrifice part of their childhood, by balancing out work and personal life, a good childhood experience is still achievable.
