Some argue that studying music subject should be mandatory in high schools, while others claim that it is a waste of time. While this change has lot of advantages regarding brain development, I believe that it is largely negative, because it comes with its own challenges such as lack of valuable time and interest towards the subject.
One the one hand, learning music in schools boosts brain productivity. It means that, while doing academic tasks such as solving maths problems or reading complex academic books, the students’ brain experiences fatigue. In this case, introducing music classes is good idea. Music not only helps to relax, but improves memory, concentration and creativity which are the key elements for academic success in other subjects too. In addition, music courses at school build discipline and patience. Learning an instrument or mastering a song requires consistent practice and focus. Studies show that good brain focus boosts performance in subjects like maths and reading.
On the other hand, compulsory music classes are not a productive use of time. In my opinion, music subject reduces precious time of students, which can be used for more serious subjects like science or languages. Music curriculum interrupts pupils in studying more complicated subjects, as they require more time and academic effort. Moreover, statistics show that majority of scholars are not interested in studying music as a whole subject, which makes it inapplicable to school curriculum.
To sum up, while music classes give students opportunity to relax and boost brain productivity, I think that they interrupt majority of students in learning subjects like science, maths and languages.
