While some people argue that technological innovations encourage crime, I side with those who believe that such advancements help in its prevention.
On the one hand, it could be claimed that technology has increased the level of crime. This is mainly due to criminals exploiting modern developments to commit various online crimes such as scamming, hacking, identity fraud, etc. Online scams have become common in many countries, where criminals turn to advanced technology to deceive people and steal information for blackmailing. In recent years, receiving anonymous calls has become a widespread way of accessing people’s private information or bank details. Many people claim that technology has facilitated organized crime, which is another key concern. For example, the dark web has become a hub for illegal activities, approves offenses such as drug and human trafficking. Criminal networks may communicate in private and exchange illegal goods, and even hire hackers to help them.
However, I agree with those who believe that technology significantly minimizes crime level. The major reason is that modern surveillance systems, artificial intelligence have encouraged law enforecement agencies to prevent or investigate crimes more effectively. For instance, the spread use of CCTV cameras and face recognition software helps to recognize identity of offenders. Furthermore, advancements in digital investigations have improved crime-solving efficiency through DNA profiling and fingerprint scanning aiming at identifying suspects through criminal databases. Consequently, crimes that remained unsolved for decades have been resolved. These innovations not only increase conviction rates but also prevent wrong accusations. Moreover, real-time sharing of data between international crime has reduced the number of criminals who flee to other countries to avoid justice. If a suspect wants to travel abroad for fraud, police can quickly share their information with border security in another country, preventing them from escaping. Similarly, stolen passports and missing persons’ details can be shared instantly, helping authorities to track down criminals and rescue victims more efficiently.
In conclusion, although some argue that technology facilitates crime by creating new opportunities for criminals, its major role in crime prevention and law enforcement is far more revolutionary. Therefore, on balance, I believe that technology is an important factor in reducing crime rather than encouraging it.
