Some people argue that the government should invest in free public libraries in every town, while others believe that this is unnecessary because information is widely available on internet. This essay will discuss both perspective before presenting my own view.
On the one hand, supporters of public libraries believe that they play an important role in society. Libraries provide free access to book, academic material and quite study spaces which is especially beneficial for students and people from low income background who may not have reliable internet or digital device at home. In addition, libraries also serves as a community center where educational programs reading activities and workshops were held, helping to promote social interaction. For these reason, many people see public libraries as a valuable public service that ensure equal access to knowledge.
On the other hand, opponents argue that maintain public libraries is the waste of government funds in digital age. Today each and every information in accessed online through websites, e-book and online courses often at little or no cost. They believe that money spent on building, staff and physical books could be better used to improve internet infrastructure or other essential services such as healthcare and transportation. From this perspective, traditional libraries may seem out dated and less practical.
In my opinion, although internet is the powerful source of information, public libraries are still necessary. Not everyone has equal access of technology and libraries provide a reliable and safe learning environment that internet cannot fully replace. Therefore, government should continue to support public libraries while also adapting them to modern needs by including digital resources.
