Band 7+: Some people think that the range of technology currently available is increasing the gap between rich people and poor people. Others think that it is causing the opposite effect. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

One school of thought holds that the rapid development of technology deepens socioeconomic disparities, while others claim this is an unprecedented chance to enhance social life. While acknowledging justifications for this thinking, I wholeheartedly concur that the introduction of technology can profoundly bridge the gap between the rich and poor.

On the one hand, proponents argue that modern technology exacerbates social disparities. Initially, firms release newly designed products, up-to-date techniques, and specialized software, which are much more prohibitive and making them inaccessible to the low-income families. While the market-driven society highlights the wealth of individuals in higher social status, lower-income people seem unlikely to get access to these state-of-the-art devices. Once paucity of social prospects, these advancements act as a catalyst to create marginalized communities with fewer opportunities to gain benefits from technological progress.

On the other hand, these escalations can also introduce social equilibrium through the widespread connection they offer. Digital storing platforms represent a substantial source of learning materials for every educational field, assisting students from underprivileged backgrounds to gain insights about their career prospects. For instance, free public wifi hotspots in urban areas, such as bus stations, shopping malls, or airports, enabling individuals to engage in online learning, remote work, and social interactions. Moreover, online banking transactions provide secure and accessible financial management options, helping people from all economic backgrounds participate in the formal economy. This, in turn, allows the government to generate tax revenue, funding social programs that reduce economic inequality.

In conclusion, although the development of technological devices can potentially accentuate disparities, its long-term impact is much more inclusive. By expanding access to education, communication, and financial services, technology serves as a powerful tool for reducing economic inequality rather than deepening it.
