If I were the boss of my company, I would prefer to hire employees who possess both skills and experience. It’s not just about where you earned your degree; many companies won’t provide extra time for new hires to adapt, nor will they prioritize the name of your university. Here are a few reasons why I believe this to be true.
In every country, every year, a small percentage of graduates struggle to find jobs in their field, including many who have degrees from highly-ranked universities. This represents a significant problem, as employers often hesitate to hire candidates without practical experience.
On one hand, many prestigious companies offer internships to recent graduates. They value university education as a sign of a candidate’s qualifications and as proof that they possess a solid foundation of skills and knowledge. Additionally, students represent a new generation that understands the importance of actively engaging with the job market.
On the other hand, companies generally prefer to employ individuals who already have work experience and relevant skills. In fast-paced work environments, it can be challenging for new employees, especially interns, to keep up. Employers need team members who have critical thinking capabilities, practical skills, and a higher level of experience. As a result, many companies may refuse to hire fresh graduates.
In light of this, I want to emphasize the importance of gaining internship experience. Even if you have limited experience, I encourage you to pursue opportunities for internships with any company, especially if your university does not offer them. Nowadays, there are numerous opportunities available to explore the fields you are interested in. So, don’t give up!
