While one school of thought holds that television channels bring adverse impact on children, others are of the opinion that TV channels prove to be indispensable. This essay will first closely examine both views, before concluding that I agree with the latter.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some people believe that watching TV brings downside effects on children. The key rationale in favor of this thinking is that watching television negatively affects children’s cognitive function. There are a wide array of contents on TV channels, thus children may be exposed to violent and explicit content. At that age, they lack self-control and awareness, therefore, they are more prone to addiction than older individuals and tend to mimic violent actions they saw on television. As a result, it ruins children’s future and they may become offenders. In addition to this, excessive screen time also causes detrimental effects on children’s well-being. Due to lack of exercise and watching TV for a long time, they may be obese, aggressive and suffer from eye strain. For these reasons, the belief that television causes major problems seems perfectly justifiable.
On the other hand, I side with those who say that watching television holds great significance. Perhaps the foremost reason would be language acquisition. When children watch international channels with subtitles and audio-visual aids, they can become familiar with that language and grasp new vocabulary. In fact, children in Vietnam study English by watching channels such as Disney and Cartoon Network. Aside from language, children can expand their horizons by watching some channels which are both entertaining and educational. By doing this, they may comprehend knowledge about history, literature and even chemistry. Thus, it fosters their creativity, offers recommendations for their future career path and inspires them to be lifelong learners.
In conclusion, despite the concerns raised by some individuals, Icontend that watching television plays an important role in children learn new languages and acquire knowledge. However, to minimize the potential drawbacks caused by televisions, parents guidance and supervision are needed.
