Opinions are divided on whether some people find music merely entertaining or whether others believe that its importance in society is undeniable. While I understand why some support the former view, I still firmly support the latter.
Those who believe that listening to music is solely for enjoyment may have several arguments. From their point of view, although music is generally considered a recreational hobby that can help people to alleviate pressure, it is seen as less essential compared to professional fields and does not contribute to the advancement of society. For instance, when individuals who worked non-stop became weary, they often turned to music to relieve stress. Consequently, they could regain their energy and quickly complete more important tasks. Another possible argument is that music serves as a source of spiritual nourishment. The reason for this is that listening stimulates the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that can bring happiness to listeners. By way of illustration, through many songs with catchy melodies including dance and rap, listeners could be immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, thereby feeling happier.
Nevertheless, I still believe that music’s contribution is greater for several reasons. Chief among these is that music lovers tend to be willing to spend money to attend music concerts, this can allow them to experience the most authentic atmosphere. As a result, many musical companies can generate profits and attract foreign travelers for the nation, and thus boost the nation’s economy. To illustrate, in 2023, Blackpink, a globally renowned South Korean girl group with their World Tours, which enabled YG Entertainment Inc to achieve record-breaking profits from both domestic and international audiences. The second reason is that traditional music is passed down from grandparents to grandchildren, which can foster intergenerational connections and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage. For example, thanks to “Cai Luong” and “Ca Tru”, traditional art forms of Vietnam that have been maintained and transmitted by age groups, they could strengthen national identity and take pride in the nation’s culture.
In conclusion, despite acknowledging why some may argue that music serves the purpose of recreation, I still hold the belief that music plays a vital role in both human life and society.
