Band 8+: Space exploration is waste of resources. It would be better to spend that money for improving people's lives.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, opinions differ as to whether governments should allocate resources to space exploration or focus more on improving people’s lives on Earth. While there are advantages of space exploration, I firmly believe that public funds should primarily be directed towards social welfare and environmental protection.

Proponents of space exploration put forth various justifications to support their stance. They argue that when governments channel resources into space exploration, they promote technological innovation and scientific advancement, which can improve people’s daily lives through the development of GPS systems, satellite communication, and weather forecasting technology. As a result of these breakthroughs, we have a greater understanding of our universe and our planet, providing valuable data on Earth’s climate, geology, and ecosystems, contributing to our understanding of environmental processes and the impact of human activity on the planet. Furthermore, exploring outer space allows scientists to gain valuable knowledge about the universe, planetary systems, and potential future threats such as asteroid collisions. Some proponents also argue that space programs may eventually enable humans to colonize other planets in response to overpopulation and environmental degradation on Earth. Therefore, it is understandable why many governments continue to support this field.

Despite these arguments in favor of space exploration, I maintain that governments should prioritize people’s lives and the environment. Nowadays, people are struggling with poverty, hunger, inadequate healthcare, and poor living conditions, particularly in developing countries, the cost of living has risen at an alarming rate, which has made it increasingly challenging to meet basic necessities such as adequate nutrition, transportation, accommodation, and other utility bills, let alone save up for future emergencies such as education and retirement funds. Given these circumstances, allocating billions of dollars in space missions appears impractical. In addition, environmental issues require immediate financial attention. Climate change, deforestation, air contamination and biodiversity loss are threatening ecosystems across the globe. If public funding were invested in renewable energy resources, public transportation networks and environmental conservation programs, this could significantly reduce the long-lasting damage by human activity. Prioritizing these urgent challenges would produce more immediate and meaningful benefits for society than discovering information about distant planets. Therefore, the government should take responsibility for raising public awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability. This can be achieved through the implementation of school-based programs, community outreach projects, targeted social media campaigns, and other educational initiatives.

In conclusion, although space exploration undoubtedly contributes to scientific and technological progress, I contend that government should focus primarily on enhancing people’s lives and preserving the environment. In response to the serious economic and ecological challenges facing the world today, public resources would be far better spent on solving issues on Earth rather than financing expensive space programs.
