Some people think that governments should only focus on their own citizens because helping everyone in the world is simply not impossible. While i agree that looking after one’s own people is the primary duty of any government, I also believe that completely ignoring global issues would be irresponsible in today’s connected world.
To begin with, government has a fundamental responsibility to prioritize the well-being of their own citizens. Since government devernments derive both their authority and financial resources from taxpayers, they are obligated to direct spending towards national needs first. Addressing domestic challenges such as unemployment and crime is essential for maintaining internal stability and long term national strength. Furthermore, no government operates with an unlimited budget, meaning difficult choices must be made. Allocating funds to the most pressing local issues ensures that limited resources are used as effectively as possible.
However, in today’s globalised era, turning away from the rest of the world is not a wise choice. Many problems are borderless issues that spread easily across countries. The Covid-19 pandemic clearly showed how a disease in one nation can quickly affect the entire world. More recently, the ongoing US and Iran war has disrupted oil supplies and trade routes globally, proving that conflicts in one region can harm many others. Moreover, richer countries have a moral obligation to help people who suffering, simply because they have the means to do so. In the long run, working together builds greater global stability, which benefits every nation.
In conclusion, while government must put their own citizen first, ignoring the rest of the world is not a good idea. Today, all countries are connected, so helping each other matters. The best approach is balances while taking care of your own nation while still supporting others when possible.
