Band 7+: Task 2: Some people say that to prevent illness and disease, governments should focus more on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a growing belief that governments are responsible for reducing environmental pollution and inadequate housing to prevent serious illness and disease. I strongly agree with this viewpoint because these issues are closely connected to public health. However, I also believe governments should invest in better healthcare systems and promote healthy lifestyles.

As environmental problems increase, chronic illnesses spread more in this modern era. The majority of people are facing breathing problems; a minority of people even have bronchitis and asthma. Therefore, I believe that governments play a significant role in raising public awareness and establishing projects to protect nature. If they succeed in protecting the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, or improving air quality, society’s overall well-being will improve, leading to healthier locals and a stronger workforce.

Moreover, adequate housing is equally important, but many low-income families lack fully furnished homes or apartments. This issue is widely considered a major contributor to infections and respiratory diseases. If governments provide standard houses with well-developed ventilation systems, or at least encourage charities to provide housing for lower-income families, they can improve health across society because the working class’s health is key to reducing pressure on hospitals and improving overall quality of life.

Nevertheless, I assume that solving environmental and housing problems can not eliminate diseases alone. Thus, governments should use multiple approaches to involve people in healthcare programs. If they educate them about the importance of regular exercise and annual screenings, overall well-being will improve. Consequently, governments should use a comprehensive approach rather than relying solely on solving environmental problems.

To conclude, I understand that providing low-income families with good facilities and homes and tackling environmental issues are important and useful, but I also believe that thinking outside the box can help reduce serious illness and disease in the long term.
