Nowadays, many people believe that secondary and high school students should study literature from their own country, such as novels, plays and poems. However, others argue that studying literature from all over the world is more important. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.
The main reason is that, studying literature from their own country helps students understand their culture and traditions better. National poems and novels are usually written about the country’s value and lifestyle. As a result, young people can develop strong knowledge about their culture. For example, when students read books about their own country, students can give deeper knowledge about their country’s past and present days.
On the other hand, studying world literature can help learn about different cultures perspectives. Studying literature from all over the world can develop students minds and help understand how people live in other parts of the world. Studying literature from all over the world can also improve their critical thinking skills and make them more open-minded.
In conclusion, while studying literature in their own country helps students understand their country’s culture, learning about world literature also can develop students knowledge and global thinking. In my opinion, students should study both types of literature because this will help students develop a balanced understanding of their own country’s culture and world cultures.
