Band 8+: The debate over personalized medicine, tailored to an individual's genetic makeup, often clashes with the principle of universal healthcare. Should healthcare systems prioritize expensive, personalized treatments that may benefit a minority, or focus on affordable, preventative care for the entire population? Discuss the ethical considerations and offer your perspective.

The rise of personalized medicine, designed to match a person’s genetic profile, has sparked debate about fairness and priorities in modern healthcare. While such treatments offer remarkable breakthroughs for individuals with rare conditions, they also raise ethical questions about equality and resource distribution. In my view, healthcare systems should primarily focus on affordable, preventative care for the wider population, while integrating personalized medicine only when it is both effective and accessible.

On one hand, personalized medicine represents a major scientific advancement. It allows doctors to predict diseases and select treatments with greater precision, potentially saving lives that standard therapies cannot. However, these treatments are often extremely costly and available only to a privileged few. Prioritizing them could therefore deepen inequality, as public funds would be directed toward helping a small minority while the majority continues to struggle with preventable illnesses.

On the other hand, emphasizing preventive care – such as vaccination, education, and early screening – offers long-term benefits for entire societies. It not only reduces hospital costs but also promotes social justice by giving everyone an equal chance to remain healthy. Ethically, universal access should outweigh technological sophistication, since the moral goal of medicine is to protect public wellbeing, not to advance science for its own sake.

In conclusion, although personalized medicine has enormous potential, healthcare systems should not sacrifice fairness and inclusivity for innovation. The most ethical path is to maintain universal, preventative healthcare as the foundation, while gradually incorporating personalized treatments as they become more affordable and equitable.
