Band 9: The media should include more stories which report good news. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is undeniable that news reporting on various pressing issues has become increasingly prevalent, leading some to argue that the media should emphasize more stories that convey positive news. From my perspective, I largely agree with this viewpoint due to the optimism and beneficial effects that good news can have on readers, while still acknowledging the undeniable importance of other types of news.

Opponents of focusing more on positive stories emphasize the crucial role of news related to economic and health issues. Such news equips the public with essential knowledge about significant challenges that society currently faces. This awareness, in turn, enables individuals to recognize potential threats and better prepare for them. For instance, when readers learn about the rising unemployment rate, it encourages them to acquire and enhance essential skills to remain competitive in the labor market. Similarly, reporting on health-related issues can have significant benefits. As many people today lead unhealthy lifestyles characterized by excessive consumption of fast food and sedentary habits, news highlighting the risks of serious illnesses and hazardous health conditions can discourage such behaviors. In both scenarios, news serves as a catalyst for positive change.

Nonetheless, I contend that it is more advantageous to prioritize positive news, given the detrimental effects of negative news and the uplifting optimism that good news fosters. Firstly, excessive exposure to reports on issues such as wars and conflicts between nations can exacerbate feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress among readers. For example, reading about the ongoing war in Ukraine, despite it occurring far from one’s immediate community, can instill a sense of fear and uncertainty. Furthermore, the inclusion of more optimistic stories across all media platforms is crucial due to their ability to inspire and motivate people significantly. Stories about a renowned athlete who has overcome extreme training conditions and daunting obstacles to achieve success can be deeply impressive and motivating. Such narratives help instill in individuals the belief that dreams and ambitions can be realized through perseverance and hard work. Consequently, the shift towards reporting positive news offers more favorable outcomes than the previous emphasis on problem-oriented news.

In conclusion, while some may prefer news that documents pressing issues due to its importance, I maintain that increasing the coverage of good news is a better approach, considering its positive impact on readers. Therefore, it is advisable to strike a balance by harmoniously combining different types of news to meet the diverse needs of the population as a whole.
