The tables illustrate the total sales of coffee and bananas in the European market from the years 1999 and 2004. First and foremost coffee consumption and sales in the UK had an average of 1.5 million euros in coffee sales in 1999 but significantly increased to 20 million euros in 2004. A similar trend is observed in Switzerland where the fairtrade of coffee doubled from 3 to 6 million. Moreover, other countries also showed an increasing sale of coffee from 1999 to 2004, such as Denmark and Sweden which had increased from 1.8 to 2 million and 0.8 to 1 million euros respectively. Belgium showed an increase of 700 thousand euros from 1 million to 1.7 million euros in 2004.
On the other hand, bananas had a wider range in the market. Firstly UK’s sales went up from 1 to 5.5 million in 5 years. Switzerland had around 15 million euros in 1999 but the trade increased to 47 million euros in 2004. Moreover, Belgium’s sales increased from 600 thousand in 1999 to 4 million euros in 2004. However, Sweden and Denmark both show decreasing sales from 1.8 to 1 million and 2 to 0.9 million respectively.
In conclusion, the banana market in Europe fluctuates but also covers a wider range and is more popular, conversely, the coffee market is more stable and shows a greater increase in sales every year.
