It is widely believed that the amount of time spent by workers on their jobs is increasing. Consequently, more people are proposing a shorter work week and longer weekends. I completely disagree with this suggestion and believe that the current system should remain as it is.
First of all, I believe the current labor system is quite stable, and it would be risky to change the existing order as it could lead to unexpected consequences. One primary reason for this is the importance of certain jobs in sustaining the country’s economy. For example, if a manufacturer has a shift with inadequate working hours to meet production targets, it would have a direct impact on all aspects of people’s lives – from a shortage of essential goods to a rise in living costs. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain the current system, especially for workers whose jobs are essential for our well-being.
Secondly, reducing the work week may result in workers becoming less motivated and, consequently, completing less work. If workers have the opportunity to work fewer hours, they may be less enthusiastic about going to work and could experience a drop in productivity and overall performance. For instance, my friend had a high-paying job with an 8-hour shift. However, during his company’s crisis, he had to accept a reduction in working hours and salary. Before the cut, my friend was highly motivated and performed exceptionally well. However, his efficiency significantly decreased after the reduction in working hours. Therefore, workers are likely to become demotivated if the working week is shortened.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the work week should not be shortened, and workers should not have longer weekends for the reasons mentioned above.
