It is sometimes argued that whether an employee stay working for the current company depends on various reasons, in which money is believed to be the main one. While I may acknowledge the logic behind this suggestion, I still firmly disagree with it for several reasons.
Proponents of this view may have several arguments. They may well argue that appropriate compensation allows us to achieve a better living standard. Having enough money indeed helps us pay living expenses, and thus gives us the ability to set aside a budget for emergency purchases, such as medicines, surgeons, alternatives for gadgets. Nonetheless, many people still resign and stop working for their company, despite their competitive salary, just because their demands are not satisfied. A case in point for this is that many senior engineers from Apple and Google, those multinational corporations in which their annual earnings range from one to several million dollars, chose to resign from their job to launch their own startup companies due to the lengthy processes when introducing innovations they have to suffer regularly.
Therefore, I strongly believe that money is not the main factor to retain workers for several reasons, including how well they are mentally and physically treated. Chief among these is that employees, especially the juniors, also seek for permission to push boundaries and unleash their creativity. In fact, juniors, the most enthusiastic ones albeit with the biggest egos, potentially have a desire for recognition and contribution, what makes them able to spend time on ambitious creative projects, just to mark a milestone in their own career. If a junior is paid with much money while prevented from creating something innovative and game-changing, that worker will soon be bored with the current job and resign from it. The second reason is that how well worker’s physical and mental health is cared is also a thing to consider in a company. Regarding the former, I believe that companies should provide their employees high-quality corporate health program. Concerning worker’s mental health, pleasant work environment, where working time is fixed and reasonable, is also what employee should receive. Seniors, for instance, have worked for the company a long time, meaning that their property is enough for them and they can also attach importance to their family.
In conclusion, it is understandable why some may argue that money is the main reason why a worker stays working for their company. However, I cannot support such a view since the freedom for their creativity and their wellbeing are of greater importance.
