The chance to work abroad has paved the way for people to relocate with their family to overseas. While this trend certainly offers some advantages, I believe that its drawbacks are much more serious and far-reaching.
On the one hand, moving abroad together can improve the overall development and well-being of families. Since parents often earn higher salaries in foreign countries, especially developed countries, their families can enjoy a higher living standard. Therefore, better income allows families to access quality housing, healthcare, and comprehensive education for children. Additionally, children can gain valuable personal development opportunities. Specifically, they may be exposed to multicultural environments, which are quite common in foreign countries, thus broadening their horizons and helping them become more open-minded and adaptable. Not only that, they would learn new languages besides their mother tongue, serving as a plus when they enter the labour market. However, it should be acknowledged that these benefits may come at the expense of family bond and culture shock.
On the other hand, it can be argued that these benefits are relatively minor compared to the potential negative impacts. One major problem is that family members may struggle to adapt to a new environment. Language barriers and culture differences cause constant stress, which requires a plethora of time to adapt. Also, children may struggle with making friends and integrating into schools. Worse still, the loss of extended family support can negatively affect family life. Because grandparents and relatives often provide emotional and practical support in raising children, living far from relatives may lead to loneliness and weaker family bonds.
In conclusion, although moving to a foreign country with family can bring certain benefits, such as improved living standards and children’s development, I believe the disadvantages are more significant due to considerable pressure on family relationships and children’s adaptation to a new environment.
