Food undergoes thousands of miles from the origin to the customers today. From my personal stance, I suppose that this trend has adverse consequences on consumers due to decrease in the quality of products and increase in the prices of them.
To commence, the most detrimental effect of food traveling long distances is the reduction in the quality of the dishes. When food is transported thousands of miles, it may suffer from harsh weather such as sunny, rainy, and storms and it takes a long time to reach the purchaser. This means that food may accommodate preservatives, which are harmful to consumers’ well-being. Due to removing long gaps, original nutrients in food can vanish and this makes products’ flavor less delicious. According to a research of an American dietitian, it takes nutritious ingredients in food about 6 hours in food to exist . Therefore, we can infer from this study that if the food travels long distances then the products can be in the state of low quality.
In addition to that, another unwanted influence of this trend is the surge in the prices of the food. After the transporting period, that food is distributed into shops, agencies and supermarkets and these venues have to pay a fee for the transit. Therefore, purchasers need to pay an extra amount for transportation and tax besides the initial price of food. In other circumstances, they may have to spend money on interests’ shops.
In conclusion, I am convinced that traveling food thousands of miles from the farm to the consumers has negative effects on the quality and the price of it. Therefore, distributors ought to use environmentally friendly substances to keep food hygienic and transport companies should guarantee the food be clean and fresh before reaching consumers.
