Positive And Negative

Band 8+: Today more and more people want things instantly (eg. goods, services, news) Why is this? Is it positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, an increasing number of individuals are eager to get what they want immediately, such as goods, services, and news, without the need to wait for extra time. This trend can be attributed to various technological, social, and cultural factors. This essay explores the positive and negative implications of this development, proposing a balanced approach.

One major factor is the advancement of science and technology, which brings so much more convenience to people’s lives. For instance, the highly-developed transportation system makes delivery quicker and safer, enabling people to get their desired goods within short periods. Additionally, in such a competitive society, people tend to live a fast-paced life where they can save as much energy and time as possible for their work or study. Therefore, companies who want to outperform their rivals often bring more high-quality goods and services to consumers in a shorter time. The service industry is a compelling example. When consumers find that it is possible to receive services instantly, they raise the standard for potential services in the future.

On the positive side, people’s desire to get what they want instantly can motivate different industries to upgrade their products and services to excel other competitors on the market and meet consumers’ needs. These improvements can lead to enhanced efficiency and productivity, more employment opportunities, and an economic boost. Furthermore, advancements in these industries provide options for individuals to enjoy a high-quality life without spending too much time waiting, improving their overall well-being and satisfaction.

Despite the apparent advantages of instant service, I believe the negative consequences outweigh the benefits. It leads to people losing patience and the ability to take time and effort to attain what they seek and value. Unavoidably, if individuals maintain this mindset, any delay in life will cause negative emotions, impacting their attitudes towards study, work, and social interaction. People will find it difficult to be immersed in deep and critical thinking. Even worse, this lifestyle may result in health problems such as anxiety and mood disorders. Moreover, an overemphasis on instant goods and services is often associated with different kinds of promotions, attracting consumers to impulse shopping and buying unnecessary products. At the same time, during the transporting process, the use of express packaging and disposable things can lead to environmental pollution and the waste of resources.

In conclusion, technological advancements and the drive for convenience explain why most people nowadays expect to obtain what they want without any waiting time. While it can improve people’s living standards and lead to industrial upgrading, it poses significant lone-term risks to individual’s mental health and the sensible uses of resources.
