In the contemporary world, the vast majority of human activities are completely and utterly contingent on computing machines for nearly all of their operations. While this has indeed saved them an abundance of resources, I am of the adamant belief that the dependence on this technological creation has myriads of deletrious consequences.
To begin with, it is essential to elucidate the inherent insecurity of digital data, as it is prone to unlawful access by hackers. This exposes sensitive medical and personal information of citizens and puts them in harm’s way. In addition, if the security of computer systems are breached, computerized mechanisms that coordinate important tasks, such as flight and traffic lines, can malfunction and yield horrendous accidents that result in colossal losses in human lives and properties. An excellent illustration of this is the 2013 highway collision that claimed the lives of 43 individuals in Uganda as a result of a malware that penetrated the system which controlled traffic flow.
Moreover, the pace of the advancement of computer technology has superseded the ability of developing countries like mine to develop infrastructures that are indispensable to the appropriate application of computers in diverse sectors. This has resulted in many systems being computerized despite the lack of an adequate electricity supply, and the presence of frequent power outages. This situation was responsible for the plane crash that occurred in Somalia in 2019 as the computer-based communication between the airport tower and the captain of a flight was disrupted as a result of a blackout.
On the whole, I find it incontrovertible that the alarming skyrocketing of the utilization of computers in every industry has posed major hazards that are detrimental to mankind, as evidenced by increased vulnerability to accidents and data breaches. Therefore, I urge all concerned bodies to curb the involvement of digital technologies in domains that may have momentous adverse outcomes if a system misuse occurs.
