Band 9: Today people are surrounded by advertising. This affects what people think is important and has a negative impact on people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Today, people are constantly surrounded by advertising in various forms—television, social media, billboards, and even in public spaces. Some argue that this exposure to advertising influences people’s priorities and has a negative impact on their lives. I agree with this view to a significant extent, as advertisements often promote consumerism and unrealistic standards, though I also recognize that advertising can have some positive aspects.

To begin with, advertising can encourage a consumerist mentality by making people feel they need to buy more products, regardless of necessity. For example, ads often present the latest gadgets, fashion, and luxury goods as essential items for a fulfilling life. This constant push to buy more can lead to financial strain, as people may end up purchasing items they don’t need. Additionally, this consumer-driven mindset can harm the environment, as increased consumption leads to more waste and depletion of natural resources.

Moreover, advertisements often create unrealistic expectations, especially in terms of beauty and lifestyle. Many advertisements portray idealized images that are not achievable for most people, leading to dissatisfaction and self-esteem issues. For instance, ads for skincare or fitness products frequently feature models with flawless skin or perfectly toned bodies, making ordinary people feel inadequate by comparison. This can impact mental health, contributing to issues like anxiety and depression.

However, not all advertising is detrimental. Some advertisements serve beneficial purposes, such as promoting public health campaigns or raising awareness about social issues. For example, ads encouraging people to quit smoking or reminding them about the importance of road safety can have a positive influence on society. Additionally, advertisements allow small businesses to reach a wider audience, which can boost local economies and support entrepreneurship.

In conclusion, while advertising can have some positive effects, I believe its impact is largely negative due to its promotion of consumerism and unrealistic standards. Advertising often shapes people’s priorities in ways that can be detrimental to both individuals and society as a whole. Therefore, it is important for consumers to be aware of these effects and approach advertisements with a critical eye.
