Band 8+: Tourism has negative environmental impacts on tourist areas. What are these impacts? How can damaging impacts be lessened?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, tourism is increasingly recognized for its detrimental environmental effects on tourist destinations. This essay will examine potential impacts and come to a logical conclusion on how the devastating consequences may be mitigated.

On the one hand, littering in tourist areas contributes to environmental degradation. One reason for this could be the lack of adequate trash bins in visitor attractions, which encourages littering and contributes to the serious pollution of streets in popular sites. This can lead to localized ecosystem pollution, as many discarded items persist for extended periods, accumulating in soil, waterways, and natural habitats. A good idea would be to raise awareness about the ecological effects of littering and promote responsible behavior, such as properly disposing of waste.

On the other hand, the depletion of energy and water resources may cause high levels of pollution. It is believed that tourism thrives on activities that demand significant electricity inputs. Air travel, transportation within destinations, and hotel operations, and entertainment venues, all contribute to a massive footprint. As a result, this can exacerbate climate change, leading to rising sea levels, extreme weather events that may disrupt tourism activities, and changing temperatures that can harm ecosystems and biodiversity. One possibility is to invest in infrastructure to handle the increased resource demand for resources by building more efficient renewable energy supplies. By doing this, tourist destinations can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and decrease harmful emissions.

In conclusion, the most significant environmental impacts on tourist areas are waste mismanagement and unsustainable resource consumption. Alleviating these issues requires transitioning to sustainable energy and implementing educational campaigns to promote responsible behavior among tourists and locals, which may ensure long-term sustainability.
