Band 7+: With growing number of population in cities, many people are living in small homes that don't have outdoor spaces. Is it positive or negative improvement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, the prevalence of urban residents residing in compact apartments without outdoor spaces has notably surged due to the rapid population growth in these areas. While this trend can sometimes be beneficial for individuals and governments, I believe that its overall impact is more likely to be detrimental.

It is true that the growing number of individuals dwelling in compact apartments devoid of outdoor spaces can bring some benefits for both people and governments. On an individual level, the reduced size of these accommodations simplifies house maintenance, making it less labor-intensive and time-consuming compared to larger dwellings. Common household chores such as cleaning and organizing require considerably less effort and time in a smaller apartment. From a governmental perspective, the greater number of individuals living in smaller homes enables authorities to address the issue of housing shortages in urban areas effectively. As a result, more people gain access to housing services, and the relative cost of an apartment can be maintained at a lower and more affordable level for the average inhabitant.

Nevertheless, I would argue that the growing trend toward residing in compact homes should be viewed negatively for various reasons. Key among these is the challenge faced by big families, particularly those with children, who require ample space to accommodate the needs of all family members under one roof. This is nearly unattainable in a small apartment and therefore leads residents to experience feelings of confinement and crowding, thereby affecting their mental health seriously. Furthermore, the lack of adequate space within these homes typically results in a sedentary lifestyle. This is because residents of small homes engage in minimal physical activities related to home maintenance, which can lead to obesity and other health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and reduced life expectancy.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the potential benefits of individuals living in compact homes with no outdoor areas, I remain convinced that this is a negative development overall. The aforementioned reasons underline the adverse impact of this housing situation on both individuals and society as a whole.
