Positive And Negative

Band 5+: With the increasing popularity of online education, some universities are considering abolishing traditional in-person classes altogether. Is this a positive or negative development? What are the potential consequences for students and the wider academic community?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Several universities consider solely relying on online education as it is getting widespread and removing on-campus lectures entirely. I do not agree with this approach to the situation.

One of the reasons online education is benefitial is that, most students can not give all of their focus to the lecturer during the lecture due to not feeling comfortable with their surrondings. As they can not change everything to their liking they can loose their focus and instead of being attentive and listening to lecture they will think about the one thing that bothers them in that classroom. In this case, online classes will be more comfortable for them. As they have a control on their surrondings when they are joining their classes from a preferable place or room, they will be focused on the lecture and will not be distracted by the things that bother them. Another reasons is students with busy schedules will not loose their time on making the journey to the campus and back to wherever they have to be. To maintain their life some students also work besides studying and as many hours they work the more they earn, but sometimes they do not work on days of their lectures. Which means they loose money buy just attending 1 or 2 hour long lecture. But if their class was online they could join it while being on their brake. In this way they would have attended the lecture and their job.

However, there are some drawbacks for this change in educational system. First reasons is students will not be as social as they used be. When students attend their on-campus lectures they get to see each other, sit next to each other, which gives them a chance to socialize and get to know one other, and have some conversations on ther brakes. But with online classes they will not feel socializing as easy. Because when they join the lecture they listen to the lecturer, most of the time only engaging with the lecturer by answering questions or asking some, and leave the lecture without interacting with ther group mates. But when thet attend in-campus classes they get to see each other ask questions from the students and spend some extra time talkin about what they have learnt.

In conclusion, online lectures can make some students feel more comfortable and focused. Whereas, some students can loose their socializing skills while studying online. In my point of view, keeping students on-campus lectures will be more benefitial for them and their social life.
