Band 7+: Working hard is the only way to be successful. Do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that the only thing needed to succeed in life is to work hard. I completely disagree with this statement, mainly because success requires consistency and people may set unrealistic expectations for themselves.

One key reason why working hard is not enough to become successful is that, to achieve something in life, consistency is needed. This is because people can work hard only once, putting detailed attention into their goals, and then forget about them the next day, while consistency requires daily work, even if it is only for a few hours. As a result, people may accomplish their goals from time to time, strengthening their discipline and reducing the risk of burnout. For example, many sportsmen and coaches do not recommend doing excessive exercise at once, as it may lead to burnout and further laziness. Meanwhile, doing regular physical activities three times per week could maintain the overall well-being of people and improve productivity. Thus, consistency is a crucial factor in achieving success.

Another reason for this view is that working hard can result in setting unrealistic expectations. This is because many people, in order to succeed in a certain area of life, could set a large number of unattainable goals within a short period of time, which then become impossible to complete. Consequently, people become disappointed by the complexity of the tasks, which may lead to problems with self-esteem. For example, many artists and creative people, in order to create artwork or innovations, work long hours, brainstorm different ideas and sacrifice sleep, eventually becoming depressed due to their failure to achieve unrealistic goals. Thus, people tend to set unachievable goals while expecting success.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree that working hard is the only way to succeed, mainly because consistency and discipline are more important, and people can create unrealistic expectations for themselves.
