Some people argue that raising the minimum legal age for driving a car or riding a motorbike is the most effective way to improve road safety. While I acknowledge that restricting young people from driving can reduce certain risks, I disagree that it is the best solution because a range of alternative measures would be far more effective in reducing road accidents and enhancing public safety.

On the one hand, raising the legal driving age does offer certain safety benefits. Younger drivers often lack practical experience and are more likely to make impulsive decisions or engage in risk-taking behaviour on the road. By increasing the legal age limit, authorities can reduce the number of inexperienced drivers, while older individuals are generally more emotionally mature and self-disciplined, making them less likely to drive recklessly. However, this policy should not be regarded as the primary solution because traffic accidents mainly result from irresponsible behaviour and inadequate driving skills rather than age itself. In reality, many adult drivers still cause fatal collisions due to dangerous practices such as driving under the influence of alcohol or deliberately ignoring traffic regulations. Moreover, implementing such a policy could create significant practical difficulties. In many rural or suburban areas, private vehicles are the primary means of commuting to school, work, or essential services. Consequently, delaying the legal driving age could negatively affect young people’s mobility, independence, and productivity without necessarily making roads significantly safer.

Rather than relying primarily on age restrictions, governments should implement a comprehensive road-safety strategy that addresses the root causes of traffic accidents. Authorities should strengthen driver training programmes by increasing the required number of practical driving hours and introducing road-safety education from an early age. In several countries, learner drivers are now required to complete more extensive practical training under a wider range of road conditions, helping to ensure that newly licensed motorists are better prepared for real-world situations. Furthermore, imposing heavier financial penalties and expanding the use of technologies such as speed cameras can effectively discourage dangerous driving behaviour among motorists of all ages. Finally, governments should continue investing in better-designed road infrastructure, including clearer road signs, intelligent traffic-light systems, and dedicated lanes for different types of vehicles. Although these improvements require substantial financial investment, they are worthwhile in the long run. Not only do they save lives, but they also reduce healthcare expenditure and minimise the economic losses associated with traffic accidents.

In conclusion, although increasing the minimum legal driving age may reduce accidents involving inexperienced drivers, it should be regarded as only one component of a broader road-safety strategy. A combination of high-quality driver education, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and continuous investment in transport infrastructure would produce far more sustainable improvements in road safety.
