Few would dispute the increasing prevalence of YouTube in the current era, yet there are differing views on what effects it has on our lives. In this essay, I will present a comprehensive assessment of this platform’s implications.
On the one hand, YouTube can pose serious risks to people due to several flaws in its filtering system. In fact, this compromised content filter might allow certain videos with graphic content to be published, resulting in viewers’ exposure to footage of barbarism, pornography and similar harmful information. Furthermore, given that YouTube is rife with short-form videos, people could potentially experience transient bursts of intense stimulation from these clips. This can induce people to watch progressively more videos in pursuit of such stimulating reactions, which can give rise to compulsive issues like binge-watching and rising screen time.
Nevertheless, I maintain that these consequences do not diminish the importance of YouTube in that it can offer people, particularly students, a plethora of learning materials. In this sense, YouTube serves as a complementary tool to facilitate students’ knowledge acquisition, contributing to their overall academic understanding. Beyond educational benefits, this platform can be an integral component in raising public awareness of modern issues. This is evident in its ability to publicize content with minimal expenses, which environmental groups or charity organizations can put to strategic use to popularize their initiatives. To illustrate, YouTuber Mr. Beast has helped generate a ripple effect across communities, raising millions of dollars to promote reforestation through his project Team Tree. Apart from ecological concerns, he has also helped acquire substantial funding to make clean water accessible to people in underprivileged parts of the world, especially in regions of Africa.
In the final analysis, while YouTube can indeed have detrimental repercussions for people because of its content-filtering loopholes, it still plays a pivotal role in democratizing education and spreading meaningful messages about contemporary issues. Involved parties should work in tandem and take decisive measures to ensure that YouTube is a medium driven by meaningful and prosocial content rather than by superficial or even harmful information.
