Having an enormous amount of money is undeniably one of many apparent indicators of success in our capitalistic society. It allows us to afford anything that we desire. However, I disagree with the statement “rich equals success,” since there are still other factors to consider.
Owning a large fortune is indeed appealing to the vast majority of people; as it provides us with extra convenience. For example, it grants us quality education, high-quality diets, or some fancy clothes to keep up with the newest trend. It creates a privilege for us to live more comfortable and pleasant life.
However, if we define the word “success” in terms of contentment, then labeling a wealthy person as successful is somehow biased. Everyone has their own passions, goals, and sources of satisfaction, which cannot be generalized into a single indicator like wealth. As the famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tze said, during our lives, we should seek for contentment, rather than riches and fame. The Buddha also highlighted that happiness comes from our internal thoughts, regardless of the situation beyond our control. Although the saying “money doesn’t buy you happiness” may seem somewhat ambiguous, it is trying to say that everything needs money, but money cannot simply buy everything, including happiness itself.
In conclusion, while earning a decent amount of money allows us to have an extravagant life, It should not be the sole indicator of a person’s success. Everyone has their own definition of success and we should respect that while trying to live each day to the fullest, aiming for contentment and success.
