It is argued by some people that the range of technology nowadays available is raising the gap between the rich and the poor. Conversely, others believe that it can cause opposite effect. I will discuss both perspectives and explain why it can increase the gap between both social groups.
On the one hand, some people including me hold that the gap between rich and poor people has increased due to today’s technology. Increasing technological methods in manufacturing often means lots of workers lose their jobs while factory owners increase profits. For example, in many factories various advanced machines can replace the human work force, which gradually leads to unemployment. Thus, they no longer have income to manage their lives and become poorer. Meanwhile, factory owners become richer, as the part of the production costs which used to allocate to the workers’ salary will be saved. Moreover, most of high-tech companies relocate to the developing countries where the labor costs are lower, in order to save more money, increase profits, and sometimes enter new markets.
On the other hand, others maintain the idea that growing emergence of wide range of technology could narrow down the gap among the rich and the poor. In the contemporary world, variety of technology has integrated into our lives. For instance, the use of mobile phones and other digital devices has become so widespread that they provide access to jobs, education, and healthcare. Through certain apps and websites on these devices, individuals can find suitable job or access opportunities that were harder to reach previously. This integration of technology into everyday life would gradually decrease the gap and bring them to the almost same level.
In conclusion, while some group of people argue that current range of technology is narrowing the gap between rich people and poor people, mainly because of its widespread accessibility and the opportunities it creates. However, I believe that technology is more likely to widen this gap, as it often benefits the wealthy more.
