In recent years, there has been a belief that forming relationships has become easier thanks to technology. Personally, I partly agree with this viewpoint based on several reasons that will be explored in this further essay.
On the one hand, online communication undeniably provides residents with numerous benefits. Firstly, geographical barriers to communication have been reduced to some extent. With the advent of video-conferencing technology and social media, people can now keep in touch with their distant relatives and friends through video calls or virtual meetings. Moreover, it will be a huge advantage for those who work far from home to travel long distances to visit their family in a short time. Secondly, these online platforms offer many invaluable networking opportunities and help individuals expand their social circles. Specifically, high-tech devices such as Facebook or Omegle allow people to strike up a conversation and form valuable connections with overseas peers.
On the other hand, online communication can pose a challenge to individuals at some point. To begin with, developing long-term and steady relationships with other people through virtual services may be challenging. To illustrate, contacting friends through these platforms seems to lack physical interaction and body language, which play a crucial role in providing intimacy and empathy between people in a relationship. Furthermore, individuals are at higher risk of losing their security when relying on online interaction. For example, the Internet is plagued with various untrustworthy links that cybercriminals use to steal residents’ personal information. Because the Internet still cannot completely reduce these problems, its users’ security will be in danger when socializing in cyberspace.
In conclusion, while there are numerous merits associated with online communication, I am convinced that its demerits are also largely disadvantageous and cannot be ignored to ensure people’s safety in the virtual world.
