It is said that all offenders should be imprisoned, while others, including me, believe that better alternatives like forcing them to engage in local community’s activities ought to be implemented for those who commit small offenses .
On the one hand, there are two main reasons why prison is an appropriate place for the punishment of criminals. Firstly, the security of ordinary people throughout the city may be guaranteed by this action. Since there will be a few lawbreakers in the urban areas , the hazardous actions like robbing, kidnapping, carjacking which threat individuals’ lives will likely to decrease. Secondly, as limited facilities are provided in this place, they might feel regret and avoid making same mistakes again. For instance, the low quality of food, sanitary, and entertainment facilities, which have been posed in the prison-related laws lead to the reduction in the crime’s rate.
On the other hand, giving a hand by individuals, committing minor crime in societal activities is beneficial not only for mitigating the rate of crime but also for thriving a community. When they are obliged to work local communities, these labor-intensive works might not been aligned with their interests, so after several times, they will be reluctant and even regret; thus, the crime’s rate will reduce. Moreover, the society gains benefit from involving these people into these works, because the government do not have to allocate any budget to their salary and can devote it to other significant sections of the community, such as educational, health care, recreational amenities that cause to advancement of a society. Meanwhile, their commute across the city may not be too risky for city dwellers since their crime is trivial.
In conclusion, despite the fact that jail is an adequate place for criminals due to keep safe citizens’ lives and decline the rate of them, I opine that making those who commit minor crime do work as a labor is fruitful for both the reduction of crime and progress of the society.
