The two line charts illustrate the percentage of people using communal transport and private vehicles in five Australian cities- Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide from 2000 to 2010. Overall, personal car usage had the significantly higher figure than public transit.
It is clear that the trend in public transportation usage in Brisbane was different from other cities as it remained consistently at 15% in the first two years. However, it had rapidly risen from 15% in 2002 to nearly 30% by 2010, which was the peak in this chart. The percentage of Sydney kept a stable trend until 2007, then came a sharp increase until 2009, the finally stayed at nearly 25%. Furthermore, Perth and Adelaide had the similar trend, which were fluctuated slightly over the period of the decade. In addition, Melbourne maintained a stable rate of approximately 18-20%.
On the other hand, the habitants who prefer taking their personal cars were particularly dominant in Adelaide, where the percentage remained above 70% throughout the decade. Meanwhile, both Brisbane and Perth witnessed a slight increase in car usage, with Brisbane ending just over 50%, and Perth closing at 60%. However, Melbourne’s figure fluctuated slightly between 30% to 20%. Furthermore, Sydney experienced a sharp increase from 20% in 2000 to over 40% by 2006, and then it demonstrated significant decline by 10% in the last four years.
