Nowadays, mankind has to deal with a serious issue of constant increase in the world’s population. There are a plethora of reasons for this matter. From my perspective, I believe that overpopulation is the main problem for humankind because of the potential consequences that it brings.
There are two major causes for the significant rise in population density, primarily due to an imbalance between births and deaths. Firstly, thanks to medical and technological advancements, there have been noticeable improvements in healthcare, general sanitation, and nutrition. Therefore, it leads to the prevalence of cures for diseases and modern remedies, which contributes greatly to the increase in global life expectancy. In addition, the world has also witnessed a decline in mortality rates, especially infant mortality. Secondly, high fertility rates contribute significantly to the number of people on Earth, as some places may favor larger families. Moreover, the underutilization of contraceptives for fear of the lack of safety results in many unplanned pregnancies. More people being alive while fewer people dying altogether account for the total growth of population.
Considering the challenges that it poses, I am of the opinion that population boom is the greatest issue for mankind. On the one hand, overpopulation undoubtedly causes ecological degradation. The needs for housing and food because of the increase in the number of people place pressure on governments to carry out deforestation to make way for buildings and agricultural areas, which leads to a decrease in biodiversity. Furthermore, this matter also records spikes in pollution as the result of human activities that exacerbate the global warming situation. Rise in the world’s population also creates conflicts and fights over necessities and resources, such as the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
In conclusion, overpopulation is brought about by several factors, like longevity or high fertility rates. I believe that overpopulation poses the greatest challenge to humanity due to its potential threats to the environment and global peace.
