With the transformation of social standards and norms, it has become increasingly common for young individuals, irrespective of their socio-economic background, to be easily swayed by the opinions of their peers, especially in larger cities. While peer pressure can cause several drawbacks associated with poor decision making and loss of individuality, I strongly contend that its benefits like promoting personal growth and building social skills take precedence.
Advocates for disadvantages of peer pressure put forth various justifications to support their stance. Once youngsters succumb to peer pressure, they are more likely to grapple with poor decision-making, thereby fitting in with the group over making choices that align with their values and long-term objectives. This, in turn, can help young individuals to be aware of potential negative effects of peer pressure and develop the confidence to make independent decisions. Apart from poor decision making, peer pressure can also cause loss of individuality. As soon as peer pressure surpasses individuality and creativity, young people feel compelled to follow the group rather than express their own unique thoughts and ideas, leading to higher levels of negative feelings such as stress, anxiety, and depression.
Despite these drawbacks of peer pressure, in my view, positive sides of pressure among young people carry greater weight. As youngsters encounter peer pressure, they are pushed out of comfort zones and encouraged to take risks or try new experiences, ultimately leading to personal growth and development, which can enable young people to distinguish between positive influence and negative pressures from peers. Moreover, through peer pressure among teenagers, they have the potential to learn how to navigate social situations, develop important communication and negotiation skills, thus creating a sense of community and belonging among youngsters, which can be important for overall well-being. As a consequence of these important qualities, it is essential for young people to engage in healthy and beneficial activities such as studying and pursuing lofty goals. In a world where many younger generations struggle with consistent peer pressure across in all domains, positive, healthy relationships among young people make a big difference in terms of building harmonious communication not only with their fellow counterparts but their close families, loved ones and casual acquaintances as well.
In conclusion, even though peer pressure has the capacity to engender a wide range disadvantages like poor decision making and loss of individuality, I believe that its advantages such as promoted personal growth and built social skills take added significance. Only by striking a harmonious balance between advantages and disadvantages of peer pressure can young individuals ensure to overcome any burdens.
