Currently, people are likely to engage in more than job simultaneously while in the past, they used to have only one occupation. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons for the trend and its pros and cons.
From my point of view, there are several reasons why having one job in this age is not sufficient. Firstly, living expenses especially in the developing countries are much higher than what were a few decades ago as they are bound to be overwhelmed by inflation or less export turnover. Consequently, in such areas, people decide to add income stream in hope to eradicate the influences of the prevailing society circumstances. Furthermore, nowadays, more workforce is required for every major. We have witnessed fast technology development which leads to emerge diverse jobs, necessitating people to take more responsibilities than past.
On the one hand, pursuing multiple career paths may have some benefits for employees and their family. Firstly and perhaps more importantly, this brings prosperity to their home, since they are able to earn twice as much money as they did before, leading to increase in their purchase power. Additionally, people are enabled to acquire other handy skills and expertise, as the new profession require more qualification which they have to obtain.
On the other hand, there are few drawbacks for those who have more than one occupation. Firstly, this can disrupt their work-life balance. They are likely to devote a huge chunk of a day to work, making them have insufficient time to hang out with their family and friends. Plus, it may lower their productivity, as overworking in long term may reduce their physical and mental power. Consequently, they are bound to make mistake more than before, rendering them deprived of perks and even dismissed.
In conclusion, compared with past people engage in more than one job due to the higher living expenses and higher need of society for more workforce. In my view, this lifestyle may have some advantages such as prosperity and obtaining more proficiency. However, this is likely to disrupt work-life balance and lower efficiency.
