The bar chart shows the average amount of water consumed by residents in 6 Australian cities while the pie chart illustrates the proportion of water used in different sectors in 2014.
Overall, Canberra consumed the least amount of water while Perth used up the most. Water is consumed predominantly by the agriculture sector, with the other sectors sharing the remaining water resources equally.
A closer look at the bar chart reveals that residents in Perth consumed the largest quantity of water, reaching 300 kilolitres per property. It was followed by Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney, with each consuming 250, 240 and 200 kilolitres per property respectively in the last 12 months. Of the selected cities, Melbourne and Canberra had the lowest annual water consumption at 150 and 140 kilolitres per building a year on average.
A more detailed analysis of the pie chart shows that just over two thirds of the available water resource is depleted on agricultural land. Of the remaining resources, most was spent on households at 9 percent of total water consumption. The water supply, sewage and drainage together with the electricity and gas supply industries each contribute to 7 percent of annual water usage. Manufacturing and other industries each took up 4 percent of the total, with mining consuming the least at 2 percent.
