There are ongoing debates about how governments should spend their money. Some believe that they should spend it on looking for exoplanets which could support life. And others think that its unnecessary to spend money to that when it could be used to solve the problems here on Earth.
People have their reasons to think such ways as governments usually waste or rarily use their money on something beneficial for them. So should governments stop the funds for those exoplanet researchs? No, they shouldnt, but they also should not use their money on just that. The research is really important for humanity and scientists as it will create new paths for science to walk through. It also could lead to the idea of for, for instance, Elon Musk which hopes that humans will terraform and live on mars someday. Individuals who support funding this research often think that they will leave their problems behind and start a new, unproblematic life on another place. This leads to the idea of why cant they just fix the problems here instead of running away from them. The money spent for those are really large numbers as they need many cutting-edge technology and personnel. And for example, that amount could have used towards solving world-hunger or finding ways on how we can reverse the Earth to be a better place again.
I think that money should be equally spent on both matters. Leaving the Earth wont make much of a difference if we dont change how we live. Humanity will just worsen the planet they move to and eventually will have to move again. Even though I said money should be equally spent, I think that solving the problems here is more important. As it will not change anything if people can not learn to take care of where they live.
