Band 6+: Some people believe that in the future, most cities will become unlivable due to pollution and overcrowding. Others think technological innovation will solve these problems. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the next few years, a majority of cities will be less lively because there is excessive pollution and a high population density. In contrast, technology advancements will address the problems. In my opinion, the primary solution is the way the government is concerned with issues

On the one hand, addressing the pollution: air pollution, water pollution, dust pollution, and noise pollution can be achieved by relying on technologies such as monitoring carbon dioxide in the air, measuring pH balance in the water, using an electric car instead, and controlling the noise decibel. Solving overcrowding by decreasing the number of people who move out from the remote to urban areas; by using GIS mapping for predicting future population and planning for new housing. For instance, in Japan, at every construction site; a noise decibel measurement is always displayed on the wall because it is the law, which is set by the government.

On the other hand, technology cannot be the device for solving problems without people who are helping behind the scenes. The government should focus on these issues, and solve them through well-managed solutions – setting strict laws and penalties for those who contribute to making pollution, increasing funding in sustainable management, and providing awareness to everybody. Furthermore, the government can resolve the problem of too many citizens moving toward the city by equally providing infrastructure to everyone such as good healthcare, underprivileged education, and clean sanitation. For instance, the statistic illustrates that the number of people living in Bangkok has increased from 2013 to 2023, because people in rural areas are changing their settlements.

In conclusion, many people believe that in the future there will be more pollution and overcrowding, leading to a city that is unlikely to be livable. Consequently, there are lots of solutions such as setting up the law enforcement, raising the funding for the environment, and enhancing awareness among all citizens. I truly agree with this statement. However, some people think that technology can solve the problem by monitoring pollution in the air and water, and using satellite data to anticipate the number of people.
