In light of the development of technology, the Internet has become an integral part of human communication. Hence, some people believe that such a phenomenon is advantageous, while others hold an adverse insight. It is a widely debated notion and from my perspective, it is open to discussion.
To begin with, I am of the belief that social media has had several positive impacts on the way people communicate, such as its ability to break down geographical and time barriers. For instance, international students could be capable of keeping in touch with their relatives and friends online in lieu of returning home physically. Hence, not only can they avert wasting their valuable time, which could be used for studying or working, but also retain an excessive amount of money for tuition and accommodation fees. Moreover, another way that can resolve the geographical issue is phone calls, which, however, require the presence of both sides. Internet, on the other hand, can provide a platform, on which people can leave a message and others can reply whenever they are free.
Conversely, by virtue of the convenience online platforms provide, on which people are becoming dependent, numerous drawbacks are arising, conspicuously the negative effect it has on the understanding between people. To clarify, while messaging on social media, texts can not convey one’s accurate meanings and feelings, hence, a regular question could be received in a negative tone and provoke unwanted confrontations. Besides, relying on social media could result in the growth of internet scamming. For instance, tinder, an online dating app has witnessed an infamous scam, which was so severe that its story was converted into movies to raise people’s awareness.
In conclusion, while the internet and online platforms have provoked some negative impacts, they are still able to benefit people if it is being used in a moderate way.
