In recent years, working from home has become increasingly common. While this shift towards home offices offers many advantages, particularly in terms of maintaining a better work-life balance and eliminating the need for a daily commute, it also presents a drawback, such as reduced face-to-face interaction with colleagues.
One major advantage of working remotely is the possibility to adjust your schedule more efficiently and remain more flexible. Without the need to follow strict office hours while working from home, employees can organize their day according to their personal responsibilities and natural productivity peaks. This gives them a greater opportunity to maintain high levels of efficiency while still dedicating more time to family and personal affairs, and thus maintaining better work-life balance. Another advantage would be the elimination of commuting. Long daily commutes can be exhausting, especially for people working in big cities, usually subjected to traffic gems. By working from home employees can save several hours and invest them in rest, hobbies, or additional tasks. This would again improve employees’ work-life balance, well-being and consequently their productivity.
Nevertheless, one common drawback is less opportunities to have face-to-face interactions with other employees. While work from home foresees online meetings with colleges, it still cannot fully office workers. These informal interactions play a crucial role in forming the sense of belonging, and cohesion within the team, often resulting in better performance. Therefore, this lack of direct social contact may eventually lead to feelings of isolation and weaken employees’ connection to their team and the company, ultimately weakening the overall performance.
In conclusion, although working from home offers clear advantages such as better work-life balance and less time spent to commute to work, it also presents a challenge, namely the lack of direct social communication with other employee, which can lead to the sense of alienation of individuals and worse company’s results.
