Nowadays there are global problems that many governments are concerned about. One of them is crime and people believe the best solution to decrease it are longer prison sentences. Others are sure that there are other effective ways to decrease crime. This essay will discuss both views and provide its own opinion stating that this problem should be solved alternatively by increasing the level of control in public places but not by issuing longer prison sentences.
Some people think that longer sentences can be scarier for people. Freedom of movement is a basic right of an every person and nobody wants to waste years of life in jail. Sometimes people who decide to commit a crime are ready to do so as punishment is not strict enough, amounting to only 1-2 years. The longer sentence is the more one will consider committing a crime. It will lead to decreasing criminal level and people will be able to feel safe.
Others believe that it is necessary to have more control in public places in order to decrease crime. With CCTV everywhere and higher number of police officers criminals will know that they are being watched, therefore think twice before committing a crime. Personally, I am sure that this way is effective and humane because it prevents a crime, not punishes. For example, there is face recognition system in Moscow which works by cameras placed all over the city. With this feature civilians know they are watched and protected, they are relaxed, secure and safer, this is how Moscow has became a more convenient city to live.
In conclusion, some people think that longer prison sentences are the best way to decrease crime, whereas others are sure that there are alternative ways to do it such as more control in public places. This essay claims that it is more effective to increase safety, not make punishments stricter.
