Band 8+: Some people think the government should subsidise fruits and vegetables to make healthy food more affordable. Others argue that the government should tax unhealthy food instead. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is debate over whether the government should subsidise fruits and vegetables to make healthy food more affordable or impose taxes on unhealthy food to discourage its consumption. In my opinion, the government should adopt a combination of both measures, subsidising healthy foods while taxing unhealthy ones, to encourage better eating habits and make nutritious options accessible to everyone.

Subsidising fruits and vegetables can make healthy food more affordable, particularly for low-income families who may otherwise struggle to include nutritious items in their diet. Lower prices encourage people to purchase more fruits and vegetables, which in turn can prevent various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. For instance, studies in several countries have shown that when fresh produce is subsidised, consumption increases significantly, leading to measurable improvements in public health. Therefore, reducing the cost of nutritious food can be a powerful incentive for individuals to adopt healthier eating habits.

On the other hand, taxing unhealthy foods can discourage people from eating too much junk food. When items like sugary drinks or fast food become more expensive, people are more likely to choose healthier options. Additionally, the money collected from these taxes can be used to fund health programs or awareness campaigns. For example, countries that have introduced taxes on sugary drinks have seen a noticeable decrease in their consumption. Therefore, taxing unhealthy foods can help reduce health problems and promote better eating habits.

In conclusion, both subsidising healthy foods and taxing unhealthy ones have important benefits for public health. Subsidies make nutritious foods more affordable and encourage people to eat better, while taxes discourage the consumption of unhealthy options and can fund health programs. In my opinion, combining both measures is the most effective way to promote healthy eating habits and ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food.
