In terms of services, 33% of workers were employed in this industry in 1841. That number rose dramatically up to 81% over the 170-year period, showing the highest percentage among all areas. Likewise, the proportion of construction workers witnessed a slight increase of 3%, going from 5% to 8% over the same period.
In contrast, in 1841, the UK workforce was primarily in manufacturing, at 36%. However, it substantially decreased by 2011, showing 9%. The figure for agriculture/fishing went down from 22% to only 1% by the end of the period. The energy and water industry demonstrated the same 1% in 2011, while it was 3% in 1841.
