The table illustrates the number of people (in millions) who used five types of public transport in Milan between 2010 and 2014.
Overall, the metro was consistently the most popular means of transport, while taxis were the least used throughout the period. In addition, the number of passengers generally increased for all transport modes, with trains and the metro experiencing the most significant growth.
Metro usage rose steadily from 3.0 million in 2010 to 5.0 million in 2014, remaining the highest figure each year. Similarly, train passengers increased markedly, climbing from 1.4 million to 3.6 million by the end of the period, with particularly strong growth after 2012. Tram usage also followed an upward trend, rising gradually from 1.3 million in 2010 to 2.2 million in 2014.
In contrast, bus usage showed a slight decline at the beginning, dropping from 1.0 million in 2010 to 0.8 million in 2011, before increasing significantly to 2.4 million in 2014. Taxi use grew more slowly compared with the other modes, rising steadily from 0.6 million to 1.0 million over the five years.
