Many customs and traditional ways of behavior are no longer relevant to modern life and not worth keeping. Do you agree or disagree?
It is believed that many customs and traditional behaviors become impractical and thus there is no need to maintain it. From my perspective, I agree with this viewpoint. This essay will analyze both aspects of the mentioned fact.
Firstly, some traditional customs limit individual freedom in modern societies. For instance, in the feudal period of Vietnam, there were many appearances of arranged marriage which parents selected their children’s partners without their consent or even love. As a consequence, it makes a contribution to the divorce rate of Vietnam, especially at a young age. Another point to consider is that some traditions can increase gender discrimination. For example, in the past, Vietnamese girl are not allowed to go to school, and at the present, instead of going to work, they have to stay at home for household chores. Therefore, this thought “male chavinism” limited opportunities for women.
Despite these, many people claim that it is essential to preserve customs and traditions. Such people may believe that traditions help maintain cultural identity and strengthen social bonds within communities. To this, I would say that cultural identity does not depend on keeping every outdated practice. Instead, societies can preserve meaningful traditions while discarding those that no longer serve a useful purpose. For example, festivals like Tet continue to celebrate cultural heritage without forcing people to follow rigid or obsolete social rules. Therefore, abandoning irrelevant customs does not necessarily mean losing cultural identity.
In conclusion, some people say that many customs and traditions should no longer be preserved. From my point of view, I agree with this viewpoint because of individual freedom limitation and increasingly gender discrimination. Furthermore, maintaining it for cultural identity and social bonds is inaccurate.
