In this day and age, using social media has become an indispensable part of our lives and conventional forms of communication – letter writing and face-to-face meetings – are on the verge of extinction. Although this development may lead to social isolation and reduced in-person communication, I believe that potential benefits, such as instant communication and access to information, carry more weight.
It is wise to acknowledge the disadvantages social media can offer, one of which is social isolation. Nowadays, media has allowed people to communicate without leaving their homes, ultimately contributing to sedentary habits. People use emojis rather than explaining their emotions and thoughts, diminishing the sense of unity and togetherness. This, in turn, paves the way for reduced one-on-one communication and increased online interaction via social media platforms.
This argument notwithstanding, I remain convinced that social media brings unprecedented benefits to the table. The primary advantage of this trend lies in convenient communication. Social media platforms empower individuals to stay connected with their loved ones through video calls, voice messages, and texts, with emojis making communication even easier due to their non-verbal cues. For example, people living in rural areas often struggle to keep in touch with their family and friends, while social media helps them to contact them instantly, regardless of geographical location.
What is perhaps even more beneficial is quick access to information. People are able to stay updated with recent news, trends, and educational content. As students have access to educational videos, lectures, and online meetings, they study through social media networks, such as YouTube, thereby fueling academic performance. Such features of social media help people to stay conscious about upcoming dangers, global problems, and even wars, making the media far more efficient.
In conclusion, even though the aforementioned disadvantages of social media – notably reduced face-to-face communication – may undermine social bonds, I wholeheartedly consider that benefits, such as instant communication and access to information, make drawbacks trivial and less threatening.
