Contemporary societies exhibit two kinds of nature – individualistic and community-driven – each profoundly influencing how young people navigate their lives. The debate over whether youth should conform to cultural traditions or exercise personal freedom has long divided philosophers, sociologists, and policymakers alike. This essay will elaborate on both sides of the spectrum, eventually providing an opinionated argument.
Individualistic societies have proven to be wealthier than their communistic counterparts. In these settings, young people are, for the most part, not obliged to strictly adhere to historical culture. Children are free to choose their life trajectories, whether it’s a startup, an animal researcher, or an astrophysicist. People who are allowed to choose their careers, irrespective of family involvement, exhibit higher levels of happiness and satisfaction than those who are not. Teenagers in these societies grow up to be healthy individuals who do not outsource their happiness to other people.
On the other hand, in community-driven societies, youngsters are always expected to follow the culture and rituals without any question. Children are taught to prioritise community over self. Members of these settings are forced to design their lives according to rules set by their ancestors. Children here often grow up conforming to career prospects set by the family. No room is given to creative pursuits. Non-conventional paths like acting and singing are heavily criticised.
In my opinion, both societies have their merits and shortcomings. Countries like the USA, sitting at the extreme end of individuality, are among the richest in the world, yet report the highest cases of depression and loneliness. Conversely, highly community-driven nations like India, despite their rich cultural heritage, struggle economically. As Mark Manson aptly puts it, “The best thing about a culture is also the worst thing about it.” Ultimately, a middle ground that respects tradition while embracing individual freedom remains the most desirable path forward for young people everywhere.
