There is ongoing debate on whether severe punishment for broken street rules is the best way to enhance safety in roads. I believe there should be other alternative methods to deal with this problem such as putting stricker laws or increasing taxes for not following rules.
Admittedely, a strong punishment is a good way to mitigate the issue. The harsher punishment is imposed on offenders, the fewer people are likely to break the regulations. As a result, this might result in a decrease of the traffic violations, leading to safer roads. For example, drivers who know they could lose their driving licence for speeding are more likely to obey speed limits. This not only discourage reckless behaviour but also helps reduce the number of road accidents and injuries.
However, severe punishment is not enough to completely stop these kind of road accidents. Unless government increase the fines noticeably for each rule violation and strengthen the traffic regulations, most people tend to do this breaches again. Moreover, if the people know what they will recieve a heavy fine every time they break a traffic rule, they will be more careful while driving. As a result, the number of road accidents is likely to reduce. In the long term, this can encourage responsible driving and make the roads safer for everyone.
In conclusion, although harder punishment is one of the best way to drop the number of driving offenses, it might not strong enought to completely handle the problem. Therefore, I firmly believe that looking for the alternative ways is an effective solution as I mentioned above.
