Band 9: If people could choose between a life without working or a life spending too much time working, people would choose a life without work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that, if forced to choose between never working and spending an excessive amount of time at work, most individuals would opt for a life without employment. Although this perspective is valid to an extent, I do not entirely agree because meaningful work fulfills psychological and economic needs.

Admittedly, many people would prefer not to work if the only alternative were an excessively demanding career, for the reasons below. First, overworking destroys health. Consistent and intensive working hours without breaks could easily lead to chronic stress, burnout, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular diseases, and so on, which eventually impose a detrimental impact on both the physical and mental well-being of employees. Second, overworking damages relationships and gradually narrows individual circles. Overwhelming work shifts often consume the time individuals have for their families, friends, and themselves; this lack of work-life balance will accumulate, ultimately resulting in a decreased quality of life. Therefore, compared with sacrificing every aspect of life for work, remaining unemployed appears more attractive.

However, a life without work would not satisfy people in the long run. Because humans always need purpose to exist, a life dedicated solely to entertainment with no contribution to or meaningful activities could only make them happy for a short time. Work is more than income; it gives them identity, routine, and social interaction. Unlike a life without work, which possibly creates boredom, loss of motivation, or poor mental health if people experience it for a long time, life involving work can produce a sense of achievement and purpose. For example, many retirees nowadays voluntarily return to part-time jobs or volunteer work to indulge their hobbies. Furthermore, working gives employees financial independence. When people have to depend on family or government welfare, their lives are potentially less free, preventing them from pursuing their interests; thus, most people would rather seek a balanced career than avoid work completely.

In conclusion, although excessive working hours are clearly undesirable, I believe most people would ultimately prefer a healthy work-life balance rather than a life completely free from work.
